Location:
The Lake is located along Highway 93 and 95, between the centres
of Canal Flats and Fairmont
Hot Springs.
This
lake that lies in the Rocky Mountain Trench plays a very important
role in the water drainage system of the region. The source of the
Columbia River is Columbia Lake. For approximately 100 km (60 mi.)
both the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers run parallel and when they reach
Canal Flats at the south end of Columbia Lake the two rivers are less
than 2 km (1.2 mi.) apart. The Columbia River from its source flows
north while the Kootenay River continues flowing south. Eroded rock
formations called the Dutch Creek hoodoos can be seen above the south
end of Columbia Lake and there are pulloffs spots near the Dutch Creek
bridge. Columbia Lake is a great place for fishing and swimming. It
is well used as a put-in site for persons planning to canoe or kayak
